Three-body Mean Motion Resonances and the Chaotic Structure of the Asteroid Belt

چکیده

We discuss the existence and the properties of a new type of mean motion resonance populated by a large number of asteroids, the resonant angle being deÐned as a linear combination (with integer coefficients) of the mean longitudes of asteroid, Jupiter, and Saturn. We call these resonances the threebody mean motion resonances. In the present paper, we show that the anomalous large oscillation of the mean semimajor axis of about 250 numbered asteroids is associated with some of the most prominent three-body mean motion resonances, and we conjecture that the actual number of the resonant asteroids is much larger. The positive Lyapunov exponent detected for the majority of resonant bodies in our numerical integrations suggests the chaotic nature of their orbits. Moreover, we show, using frequency analysis, that orbits in the three-body mean motion resonances may slowly and chaotically di†use in eccentricity. The existence of such di†usion may have major consequences for our present understanding of the long-term evolution of the asteroidal belt and the delivery of objects to near-Earth orbits.

Numerous Weak Resonances Drive Asteroids towardTerrestrial Planets Orbits

A systematic exploration of the chaotic structure of the asteroid belt is presented, first taking into account only the perturbations provided by the four giant planets and then including also the effects of the inner planets. We find that both the inner belt (a< 2.5 AU) and the outer part of the main belt (a> 2.8 AU) are mostly chaotic. In the outer part of the belt, chaos is due to the presen...

Regular and Chaotic Dynamics in the Mean-Motion Resonances: Implications for the Structure and Evolution of the Asteroid Belt

This chapter summarizes the achievements over the last decade in understanding the effect of mean-motion resonances on asteroid orbits. The developments from the beginning of the 1990s are many. They range from a complete theoretical description of the secular dynamics in the mean-motion resonances associated with the Kirkwood gaps to the discovery of the threebody resonances and slow chaotic p...

On the Origin of Chaos in the Asteroid Belt

We consider the e†ect of gravitational perturbations from Jupiter on the dynamics of asteroids, when Jupiter is itself perturbed by Saturn. The presence of Saturn introduces a number of additional frequencies into JupiterÏs orbit. These frequencies in turn produce chaos in narrow regions on either side of the chaotic zones associated with the mean motion resonances between the asteroids and Jup...

Mean Motion Resonances in the Transneptunian RegionPart II: The 1 : 2, 3 : 4, and Weaker Resonances

The stability of orbits in the transneptunian region is numerically computed. It is found that, in analogy to the asteroid belt, there exist many chaotic layers associated with thin mean-motion resonances. These are either moderateand high-order resonances with Neptune or three-body resonances with Neptune and Uranus. The orbital eccentricity chaotically increases at the thin resonances, allowi...

On a Fokker-Planck approach to asteroidal transport

Recent studies show that chaotic motion should be considered as the rule rather than the exception in the asteroid belt, if the perturbations of many planets are taken into account. Assuming that asteroids are constantly diffusing away from the main belt, we may model their transport, i.e. the evolution of a distribution of initial conditions in the action space of the respective dynamical syst...
